About the Film: Veils—Requiem for Trayvon
Directed by Courtney Baker-Oliver and adapted from the acclaimed stage play by Steven A. Butler, Jr., Veils—Requiem for Trayvon is a cinematic journey of grief, resistance, and resilience. The story follows Sybrina Fulton, whose teenaged son, Trayvon Martin, is murdered by a self-appointed “neighborhood watchman.” As the world holds vigils demanding justice, Sybrina grapples with unimaginable loss.
On the morning of Trayvon’s funeral, Sybrina receives a mourning veil from a supporter—an unwelcome reminder of her painful new reality. In this moment of despair, she is visited by Yemaya, the African orisha of motherhood, who takes her on a spiritual and historical journey through the Civil Rights Movement. Together, they revisit the sacrifices of mothers like Mamie Till, Myrlie Evers, and the families of the Four Little Girls killed in the Birmingham church bombing.
Through these powerful vignettes and with stirring original music, Sybrina finds the courage to stand for her son and all the children lost to racial violence.
Filmed at VU Studios in Nashville, Veils utilizes cutting-edge AI visuals, breathtaking cinematography by Andre Strong, and an exceptional cast of Broadway and regional theater stars, including Roz White as Sybrina, Desiré DuBoseas Yemaya, Kyra Da Costa as Myrlie Evers, and Corisa Myers as Mamie Till. The film has been described as a “Black Lives Matter Hamilton,” merging history, music, and activism in a truly transformative experience.
Produced by Restoration Stage & Film Corporation in association with Films With a Purpose and LiFORM FnS, the film’s creative team includes Executive Producer Sandra J. Evers-Manly, Musical Director Justin Thompson, and Music Supervisor Christopher John Burnett.
